The most profitable fundraisers, ranked by return on your time

Some fundraisers take five hours and raise $5,000. Others take 500 hours and raise $1,000. This is every idea in the guide, ranked by what it typically raises for each hour the organiser puts in.

How it’s worked out: the typical amount raised, divided by the middle of the organiser-hours range. It counts the organiser’s time, not the volunteers on the day, so a sausage sizzle with twelve helpers looks better here than it feels. Grants top the list because the work is one application, but most applications don’t succeed. Most figures are estimates; treat the order as a rough guide.

9 ideas aren’t ranked, because their organiser time isn’t a number we can divide by or their money goes to a national charity rather than your group.
